Press Release

LATITUDE Gallery is delighted to present "Untold Tale," Lanyi Gao's debut solo exhibition in New York, opening January 19, 2024. The exhibition will be on on view till February 18th, 2024.

After twice successful collaborations of group shows in the previous years, gallery formally introduces Lanyi Gao's captivating "Greeting Cards" series, a decontextualization of My Melody, a beloved childhood icon and 1990s Sanrio cartoon character in this solo exhibition. Gao skillfully navigates the nuances of portraying the spectrum of joy and complexities experienced by women from innocence to maturity and initiates a compelling dialogue about female empowerment.

At the heart of Gao's artistic endeavor lies the manipulation and transformation of the pervasive grief stemming from gender inequality into a reservoir of sarcastic yet empowering energy. Artist's distinctive style weaves together elements of whimsy and satire, crafting an alternative world that mirrors the multifaceted tapestry of women's experiences.

Known for its delicate silk-screening printing and dynamic outlines, the "Greeting Cards" collection balances light-hearted charm with a subtle critique of societal expectations. Gao's artistic expression examines the historical context of feminine archetypes and subverts established norms, blending levity with gravity and the playful with the profound. Her cultural insights reframe My Melody, imbuing the artwork with a potent sense of feminine autonomy that invites contemplation and champions empowerment.

This exhibition not only celebrates the artist's individual achievements but also serves as a reflection and response to the status of women in art and society. Lanyi Gao's meticulous attention to gender inequality and the societal standing of women resonates throughout the exhibition, offering the audience a vibrant voice with profound insights. "Untold Tale" marks a crucial step in Gao's ongoing exploration and redefinition of these issues, providing viewers with a space for reflection and meaningful dialogue. Join LATITUDE in this celebration of art, culture, and the rich tapestry of femininity that Lanyi Gao unfolds in her work.
